Seduction in the Rose Garden – my Love Affair with Rose

If I were casting a movie about the personified rose, it would be Scarlett Johansson playing the lead – vivacious, arresting, witty and peerless.

“She cast her fragrance and her radiance over me. I ought never to have run away from her… I ought to have guessed all the affection that lay behind her poor little stratagems. Flowers are so inconsistent! But I was too young to know how to love her…”  wrote Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in ‘The Little Prince’.

Ah, but I am not too young to know her nor how to love her: the Rose.

My novel hero will arrange a romantic rendezvous in Queen Mary’s beautiful Rose Garden in Regent’s Park, London, for a picnic amidst the heady and sensuous clouds of blooms, followed by tickets to the Open Air Theatre in the Park to see ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as a sheer indulgence and for deep belly laughs. “Methought I was enamour’d of an ass.”

Sadly, on a recent trip to London there was no time for such hedonism as Shakespeare in the park nor lusciously scented perennials.

However, there was a little time for shopping. I find it very hard to get the products that I use and love in Antigua, so I was eager to stock up while in Europe.

I am so excited by the latest changes to my skincare routine. From training courses with make up artists and advice from beauticians, the consistently described most important part of your daily skincare routine is the cleanse. I have used various brands in the past from the award-winning Australian Alpha H (I had to buy this online at beautybay.net) to the gentle foaming cleanser by Caudalie that I bought in my local pharmacy in Switzerland and France.

However, my topical research before I returned to Europe lead me to discover the Rosa Centifolia range by REN.

This can only be described as sublime. The first time I used it I was drawn in my the intense scent of rose that has been captured in all it’s depth. It is a very gentle cleanser but oh! the scent transports me to the park in London and the illicit hero worship.

My love affair with rose does not end with REN however.

A spritz of rose water on my pillow at night before I sleep, with the ‘Eau Florale de Rose Ancienne’, helps me drift into a floral slumber.

And by day, my signature scent is Jo Malone’s ‘Peony and Blush Suede’ – just the words won me over to start with! “The essence of charm.  Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile.  Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower.  Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede.  Luxurious and seductive.” Yes, let that be me!

An echo of my infatuation for the wonders of rose, in the words of John Boyle O’Reilly (an Irish poet, of course), here is my love letter to Rose (indeed a love letter that I inscribed on the ceremony booklets for my wedding – this has been a longstanding affair, you see):

“The red rose whispers of passion,

And the white rose breathes of love,

O the red rose is a falcon,

And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream-white rosebud,

With a flush on it’s petal tips;

For the love that is purest and sweetest

Has a kiss of desire on the lips.”

Do you have a love affair with a signature scent? Do let me know! If not, I urge you to awaken your olfactory senses and discover your desires. A signature scent is glamorous and instantly recognisable. It is wonderful to have friends comment that you smell just like you! I love that my children smell different perfumes yet when the smell rose they say that it is like Mummy.

Yours with passion x
